Are fun. I've been playing the Space Marine game and getting totally nostalgic. Then I find out that Relic are doing a Dreadnought DLC pack so I got super excited and ended up drawing this.

Also the MK6 guy looks a little out of place but I LOVE that armour so had to include it :D

This weekend I was privileged enough to take part in the Thoughtbubble comic convention in Leeds. I was sharing a table with Andrew Tunney and we had a blast!

Both days were pretty constant for us, there was a lot of interest in both Peabody and D'Gorath and Girl and Boy which was great.

I had my first ever con sketch to draw!

I got to speak to a childhood hero of mine Mr Nigel Dobbyn who complimented my work (ohmygosh) and to Ian Edington who I got all cotton mouthed talking to and nervously gave him a flyer.

I got to catch up with a bunch of very talented individuals who I've spoken to at various cons including Antony Johnson, Kieron Gillen, John Allison, Joe List and Marc Ellerby.

I also got to make a bunch of new friends in the form of the We are words and pictures guys he

aded by Matthew Sheret and Julia Scheele and Sarah Gordon who were both lovely and sat on a table behind us.

There was also the roller derby team the Hot Wheel RD who were super nice and got a bunch of the stuff off my table :D

I'd like to say a big thank you to Lisa Wood for putting the con together and making Peabody and D'Gorath con debut so wonderful!

So the pages for Peabody and D'Gorath issue 1 are coming along nicely, got about half of it drawn with my intrepid colourist Andrew Tunney colouring as we go so I'm still on schedule for a November release :)

Thoughtbubble Anthology 2011

This year I have been fortunate enough to be included in the Thoughbubble anthology put together by Thoughtbubble Comic con with all proceeds going to the Barnardos childrens charity.

Now I was sold on the fact that it was for a good cause and Id get stuff printed but to add to that I ended up working with the great Mike Carey! Our two page comic of the life and times of Leonardo Da Vinci was a lot of fun to work on and was completed with excellent colours by my comics partner in crime Andrew Tunney.

As if that wasn't enough the anthology was picked up by Image who in an awesome show of generosity have elected to donate the money they would receive to Barnardos too!

And it got featured on CBR the other day, if you look down near the bottom of the article you can actually see one of the Da Vinci pages I did!

Peabody and D'Gorath!

Ah it has indeed been an exciting year for my creations! Peabody and D'Gorath was picked up by SLG earlier this year. I managed to wrangle a 5 page preview onto the SLG booth at comic con and was giving out posters too to promote it.

My plan is to get the first and possible second issues done for Thoughtbubble in November. Hard dead line I know but Im a hard man who likes hard things.

One of my favourite pieces I've done recently, this was part of an exercise in digital painting. When I got on the MA I really really wanted to get digital painting down since it seems that if you want to do concept work having "lines" and "cel shading" just aint cutting it no matter how good you can make it. This was the end product of a lot of lack lustre images I "painted" and it was at the point I realised that the work I do that I like just doesn't work painted.

A valuable lesson indeed.

In this project I was trying to get models and scenes that were as close to my illustrations as I could. It was ok, some of the stuff turned out really well and some of it fell flat but it was a good learning process :)

A Lot of Time Has Past!

Indeed it has, nearly a year since I last posted on this blog! You'd almost mistake the lack of posts for some kind of mental breakdown/laziness/death, all three of these are WRONG! Well except for the laziness. I'm terrible at keeping things updated D:

Anyways, I have been busy this past year. I got signed to SLG and was on their booth at SDCC promoting Peabody and D'Gorath. I'm currently waiting on an ok from the boss man on the first few scripts.

I've been rocking the MA in Games design at Preston and have a term of that left to do. My progress on that can be seen here- http://mdpenmanma.blogspot.com/

I've been doing some 3D stuff and trying to get to grips with creating models for games.

It's been a busy year with lots of stuff done but I keep forgetting the stuff Ive drawn or Ive posted it up in random places around the net.

Given that this is a damn sight easier to update than my website I shall endeavour to post up the new stuff Im working on until I get a fancy wordpress site and leave blogger forever.

Maaaaan it feels like ages since Ive draw Greasy Joe!

Ive been super busy alately with work and my masters course but whilst it was quiet in class I found myself doodling characters and I decided to revisit some older ones.

Hadnt done normal Joe in a while so I drew him and Betty then decided to check if I could still draw Greasy Joe and ended up with the thumbnail for this.

The idea for this image spawned an idea for a trio of images that Id like to do about Joe beating up on nerdy monsters.

Ive been working away on various comic projects to try and get something off the ground and working on stuff for the course I teach on.
In my spare time however I have managed to rock out this bit of fan art for the amazing Mr James Stokoe's slice of fantasy awesome ORK STAIN
James is a fantastic artist and spins a brilliant yarn so you should definately check out his work HES GUNNA BE HUGE SOON. Also his next comic venture Sullivans Sluggers will be out shortly so GO GET THAT TOO

I keep forgeting to update this blog! Got a few pieces to show off but not as much as Id like since Ive had some comic and book work to get done but I cant complain :)

First up is a picture of Kure. I havent drawn him for a while and as the way I draw keeps changing I have to adapt him bit by bit. Im pretty pleased with how this turned out, its close to how I want my characters to look and I like the attitude he has. Ive got a rambling story idea for Kure that gained abit of clarity after reading the Dark Tower books and Id love to sit down and write and draw it out at some point. Just not right now. More like in the future when I have people who actually want to see my stuff :P

Second is a sketch of a lady I did that turned int oa piece of fanart. Ive been working on my characters, in particular females which have always been a weakness of mine. In the process of practicing I came up with a half realised sketch of a lady from behind that I liked and I decided to work it up into a full picture. About half way through I liked the figure but couldnt get a feel for the character and since Im a fan of Lily of the Valley I turned it into a piece of fanart.

Finally this is a piece of fanart for Mr Sheldon Vella. I knew Sheldon and his arch rival James from Entervoid and they were a source of inspiration for me. I knew I wanted to get better than those guys. Unfortunately for me those guys didnt rest on their laurels and just kept getting better and better. I guess that means Ive just gotta work harder!
Kill Audio is a pretty awesome series which I cant be bothered explaining but I shall recommend it to anyone who hasnt read it.
I would also (as always) strongly suggest you read Sheldons webcomic SUPERTRON since its pretty much the best thing on Zuda.com

Kane&Lynch Dead Men

I'm glad I played Kane&Lynch instead of listening to games critiques. Sure it has its down sides, annoying controls some impossibly hard sections and the night scenes being way too dark, but the story and characters are amazing! Ive played through on CO-OP a few times and thoroughly enjoyed it. I especially love Lynch, he's a contradictory psychopath but he's so much more fun to play as than Kane.

Hello Blog, Ive been neglecting you Im afraid. Ive been busy working on a comic so all I have to show for my months of planning is a garbled sketchbook of ideas. I do however have a concept sheet here that I just finished. Its good old Florida Bill redone for the 20s setting of my comic!

This piece is quite special since its my first totally digital piece. Having shied away from digital work for so long ( I was unable to get line art I was happy with) I finally took the plunge. My job has forced me to get alot more experimental with photoshop and Ive been seeing alot of the upside of working totally digital so I figured Id test it out and Im pretty happy with the results :)

I read the first Skulduggery Pleasant book a while ago and was impressed with it, its a fun read and i recon it should be the next studio ghibli movie! Anyways, i figured it'd make a cool comic so decided to adapt a small section of the book, no joke this is like 2 pages worth. I had to switch up some of the action and dialogue so that it worked alittle better in comic format.

Recently i got an email from a guy called Shawn, he has a small comic workshop called angry gnome and asked if id be interested in drawing out one of his stories for an anthology of his. He sent me a couple of scripts and this was the one i liked the most.
Actually drawing this was kinda hard since there was quite alot to fit into the two pages and my pacing is usually far more leasurly than this but i think it turned out ok

So, this weeks project was to produce a Zine, i chose to do mine on a guy i have seen about Preston and me trying to find out his secret. The comic folds out to a poster which is what ive posted up here,i assure you its much easier to read in real life since the folds indicate where one page starts and the other ends, the poster is made up of 8 pags read fomr left to right, HAVE FUN FIGURING IT OUTTT

Our tutor Sally asked three of us to go to a gallery show that she was helping organise and draw the people that were there. Julian Cope was the guest speaker and he didnt like being filmed so we drew him suring his talk. We were then asked to draw him during an audio interview he was having done and this illustration is the product of that interview. He was a very charismatic and intelligent man. I belive this is gunn be used in a podcast.

Ok, so today i looked at some of Ben Templesmith's stuff. His art is really hit and miss but when he gets it right it looks amazing. I followed his method kinda, using ink washes and white hightlights then scanning that into photoshop and totally messing with colours. This was an experiment and im pretty happy with the results. Ill probably try this again hopefully Itll be better next time though!

Man, I hate horses, they just creep me out yano? And theyre hard to draw. Alas its a nessessary thing to be able to draw them for this comic im doing so heres a practice at a horse, i threw colours under it jsut for the sake of it really. Im quite happy with how this came out, note the horse's hollow expression. Thats there on purpose, because as i stated before they creep me out.

This is the last comic i did on the comic battle site Entervoid.com, Dandy Dan is my character and Coppermouth belongs to my friend Austin. We had three weeks to draw this and with me finishing early i figured id drop some tones on their to see what it would look like.
